All about Bungalow 26
We opened Bungalow 26 in 2006. I always knew I would be an entrepreneur of some sort. My background is in retail, specifically merchandising and display. I started a floral design company, that led into interior decorating and that led into the shop.
Why did you become an entrepreneur?
I love shopping. When I started the shop, I felt like there was a void in locally owned shops that myself and my friends would shop at. I wanted to open a shop like the ones I would see in larger cities.
Why did you join the Chamber?
I joined the Chamber to re-energize myself as a business owner. It’s easy to get complacent.
What’s the best thing about doing business in Wichita?
I always tell people that there is no better place to start retail business than right now in Wichita, Kansas. Wichita is lucky to feel like a small town where business is concerned, it feels very personal here. Businesses tend to be very supportive of one another.
To what do you attribute your success?
I attribute my success to providing something the city didn't have much of 13 years ago, which was good local shopping - so much has changed in 13 years!
What is something people may not know about Bungalow 26?
People may not know that a lot of our inventory is local, and several of those lines are actually made in the shop--I have made all natural bath products since I was in high school, and they are featured heavily in the shop, as well as handmade soy candles that are sold in stores around Kansas, as well as California.
What differentiates your shop from other retailers?
The vibe in the shop differentiates us from the competitors. People walk in and constantly remark that they could spend all day in here. It feels like family and new customers almost always become regulars.
Where do you see your business in five years?
Hopefully in 5 years, I'm doing this.
What else are you involved in?
Bungalow 26 was on the original committee that started 2nd Saturday. I've also been involved with American Express Small Business Saturday since it's inception, including the Wichita group that promotes it. I also serve on the advisory committee for the Assistance League of Wichita, and work closely with their Bear Hugs program.
